Britt Weygandt

Britt Weygandt has a broad and deep political, policy and legal background, especially in areas concerning water, natural resources, energy and land-use issues.

She has led the Colorado State Board of Land Commissioners since December 2003, a time in which Land Board revenues have grown from $28 million to more than $63 million annually. She has overseen a $5 million operating budget and 38 employees. with an asset portfolio of 4 million acres of mineral rights and 2.8 million acres of surface property ownership in the state. She also has been in charge of a portfolio of renewable energy projects along with commercial real estate.

Weygandt negotiated the largest Land Board revenue deal in history, a deal with Lend Lease Lowry Range, LLC, that's expected to generate more than $330 million in earnings for the Land Board's school trust. She has experience in oil and gas production, coal, commercial properties, development opportunities, power production including renewable energy, transmission corridors, water rights acquisition and protection, and agriculture.

Before joining the Land Board, Weygandt served as Chief Legal Counsel to Gov. Bill Owens from October 2001-December 2003. She had served as Deputy Counsel from January 1999 until her appointment as Chief Counsel. During her time in that office, she successfully negotiated several agreements on contentious natural resources disputes, including air quality issues, and was instrumental reaching final agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency over implementation of Colorado’s Environmental Self Audit law.

Weygandt  began her legal career in 1997, working for Colorado Attorney General Gale Norton. Her work focused on defending Colorado’s federal and interstate water rights and also on Endangered Species Act litigation.

She spent spent several years on Capitol Hill as a legislative aide to Congressman (now Senator) Wayne Allard. During law school summer breaks, she returned to Washington to work for the Senate Judiciary Committee and for the House Science Committee on amendments to the Clean Water Act.

 Weygandt has a Juris Doctorate from the University of Colorado School of Law and earned her undergraduate degree in International Relations from the University of Colorado. She and her husband, Mark, live in Erie, Colorado.
